For the Familiar, see Dragon (Familiar).

Like the other bosses, the Ancient Dragon does have a weakness. To get it to land, a player must use the ballista turrets placed around the Summit to hit the Dragon. Once hit, the Dragon will land, allowing the players to attack it. Be warned, the Dragon will still attack by launching fire balls, blowing fire and biting at you. The Dragon is encountered in the The Summit.

Appearance

The Dragon is a grey, flying beast. He hangs over the edge of the Summit level. The player can see a collar around his neck which loosely resembles a gear. With a horn and fire eyes, he's a fierce beast. His teeth are also razor sharp, and horns line his chin. The Dragon's animation will slow as he is about to spew fire.

The Summit

After nine difficult waves, the ultimate boss appears - the Ancient Dragon who soars around the castle walls. It must be shot down by the war ballistas. Once he is shot down, he will appear hanging on to one of three sides and can now be attacked normally. This is a great level to farm mana and experience, especially on the insane and nightmare difficulty.

Strategy

Warballista

Fire the War Ballistae at the Dragon

Ensure you have sturdy defenses protecting your crystals during the final boss wave. These defenses must require little to no repair maintenance as most of your attention must be directed towards the boss (this strategy applies to Nightmare as well).

In cooperative play, the best strategy would be to have one person stay behind to repair the defenses as needed, while the other player runs around the ramparts. A Squire/Countess or Barbarian are the best classes for this job. Blood Rage movement speed bonus and increased health pool or Tornado Stance movement speed increase make them perfect classes for this strategy. Watch the mini-map as you run around to know when the dragon is lined up for a good shot. If you manage to shoot it, the dragon will land and breathe fire. If you are a Squire, activate Blood Rage and attack it. Run away when the dragon breathes fire and heal if needed. Repeat this process until you defeat the dragon. If you are the Apprentice or Huntress, use ranged damage while standing on the ramp to avoid a pyroclastic death. As a Monk, you should melee him until the dragon breathes fire. While he does, run to the ramp and use your ranged attack. When the dragon is no longer breathing fire, return to hitting him with your melee attacks.

If you have the spare DU you can also set up ranged towers on the top of the steps pointing down to where the dragon will rest. In this way you can be damaging the dragon continualy and gives you some time to repair defences.

Reward

Beating the Ancient Dragon will yield your class's legendary weapon and a familiar for your class. Glitterhelm Caverns will also be playable now.
