The Infested Ruins is widely considered the best high-end Survival armor farming map in the game Pre-Redux. Main builder stat requirements to beat the Campaign on and start the Ultimate grind on NMHC are around 4,000.

Build Layout[]

There are a plethora of successful Campaign and Survival defense builds for the Infested Ruins. Some emphasize damaging the boss. Others focus on longevity. Lightning Towers are an especially prominent tower to aggro the many Ogres and from the fact, in Vanilla, they deal 8.0x damage to Wasps (excluding their queen). The Harbingers being poison-based here instead of lightning is another plus.

In general, build auras and a Gas Trap at each core and physical defenses near any core or in-between the middle and east ones. One Buff Beam can cover two aura stacks and your main damage towers.

Through the Waves[]

The first two Campaign waves are often a race against the Wasps and build timers. Combat immediately kicks off with an Ogre too. Bring a friend over if you cannot handle the pace alone. You should have all of your auras, Buff Beams and any Gas Traps built by the first wave and nearly everything else up by the second wave.

  • If starting as a DPS Jester, wheel triple-swords as soon as you can to aggro the Ogre.

Boss Fight - Wasp Queen[]

This arthropod queen flies in at the northeast corner. Like the Spider Queen, she can summon Wasps, push non-minion defenses on contact and suppress heroes with her venom spit projectiles. That last characteristic restricts the uptime of boost abilities (unless evaded).

  • At least two heroes are recommended for this boss fight, one of them being a Tower Boost Monk. Someone needs to keep the Wasp Queen busy to not shatter key defenses. It is possible to trap her near the east core.
  • Bulky heroes with 90% generic and poison resistance under a boosted Strength Drain and Healing Aura can be rendered unkillable to the Queen one-on-one. Legendary Knight, Legendary Monk and the Barbarian are all great tank candidates.

Survival Mode - The Armor Farm[]

If you do not already know, it is usually better to not toggle on Mix Mode, in Vanilla DD1. The extra Skeletons make waves take longer, and the point the quality modifier on armor caps out is only 1-2 waves sooner.

This benchmark is reached at wave 22 in the Infested Ruins on NMHC unmixed. Start on wave 20 or prior to fully upgrade everything on-time. How far you get will obviously depend on the build, your current defense stats and usage of Guardian pets on Summoners. Dying to Harbingers is another factor that can end runs.

  • Buff your mage towers with Huntress and Apprentice Guardians, one of each pet per 5-tower stack.
  • You will likely have to repair auras during later waves. Before then, it should be safe to go AFK.

Other Notes[]

  • In Redux, non-boss Wasps are weak to fire damage (by 1.5x) instead of LTs.
