The SAM Unit is a Series EV defense introduced in Dungeon Defenders Redux.

It is a large turret that fires homing rockets over a wide firing cone. Theses rockets inflict splash fire damage on impact. Enemies hit by this tower, Ogres in particular, are more likely to turn their attention towards the SAM compared to other damage-dealing towers. Depending on the map, this trait makes SAMs a good alternative to distract Ogres and Cyclopes from attacking Eternia Crystals or other targets.

The SAM also shares the same target priority as the Deadly Striker Tower, weighing Djinn the most out of all enemy types, followed by Wyverns.

Trivia[]

  • The SAM Unit is the only defense that does not follow its corresponding hero's defense type, in this case with Series EV: beams.
  • This tower's model is based on the goblin-operated rocket launchers on the Goblin Battlecruiser.
  • SAM Units received multiple damage nerfs over the course of Redux's development pre-December 2020. A major reason for these balance changes were due to how quickly they could defeat the Flying Mech on Omenak, even on Ascension.
  • This tower accidentally had a 360° firing range in older versions.
  • SAM stands for "Surface-to-Air Missile." SAMs were developed during World War II and later used to shoot down enemy aircraft.
    • Their anti-air purpose is reflected in DD1 Redux by SAM Units preferring to attack aerial enemies.
