Staves are a weapon type used by the Apprentice, Adept, Series EV and Jester.

These weapons have a ranged attack which typically fires up to six (6) projectiles, or "Magic Bolts," at once in a horizontal fan spread and a radial knockback attack (also known as "Arcane/Protean Surge") which damages and pushes back enemies. Both can be charged up by holding down the primary/secondary attack button. This increases the damage dealt as well as the splash/effect radius; the knockback attack's range is further amplified by the Knockback Bonus Knockback Bonus weapon stat. When both buttons are held down simultaneously, the hero will auto-fire at 0% charge.

Staves with Different Projectile Spreads[]

*Some staves deviate from the common fan spread and are usually better against single or tightly grouped mobs from afar.

Spread Type Description Example Weapons
Single Shot Absolutely one projectile is fired forward at a time. Ember Sceptre, Serpent Staff
Double Shot A very tight vertical spread. Honey Staff
Circular/Hexagonal A tighter spread with no central projectile. Oculus of the Genie King, Arch Mage's Blade Staff
Triangular Same as circular, but as an equilateral triangle. Elder Staff, Void Staff
Diagonal Line A fixedly-oriented diagonal spread. Enchanted Bishop
Cross/Chain Rod A tighter horizontal spread where 4/6 projectiles take on a rhombus arrangement. Emerald Staff, Staff of Hearts
V-Shape/

Filled Triangle

A tightly packed spread that is top-heavy. Bone Staff, Rainmaker

Staff Charge Times[]

Staves often carry an exclusive Charge Speed Charge Speed Bonus stat which reduces the time it takes to fully charge an attack. The table below lists charge times for every possible stat value, without taking the game's framerate into consideration. The rightmost column is used exclusively for The Forrest's Sorrow and Hand of the Queen.

*Assuming the game is running at 60 FPS, the fastest charge time possible is technically 6-7 frames (either 0.1 or ~0.1167 seconds).

Notes[]

  • It takes longer for Series EV and the Jester to unleash a knockback attack, compared to native staff users (the Apprentice and Adept).
  • In general, the Jester deals more damage with staves than any other weapon type. This is because she is partially treated as an Apprentice internally and therefore does not receive a damage penalty.
  • In Redux, the Apprentice and Adept's damage scaling has been buffed to match the Jester's by default.
  • With a fast enough charge rate, any given staff can inflict more DPS through partially-charged shots than either auto-firing or unleashing fully-charged shots.
    • In this context, charging for too long is known as "overcharging" due to the end lag caused by the fully-charged attack animation.
    • Some PC players may choose to run a specialized macro in order to maximize their staff's DPS without precise button timings. The faster the staff charges up, the greater its damage potential becomes. Using one of these scripts, the Super Legendary Mage in Redux can output over 50 million DPS consistently by himself on Nightmare and Ascension, with a Propeller Cat equipped and his Overcharge ability active.
  • In Redux, staves cannot roll with a starting Charge Speed beyond the 70's range.
